Shouldn't I replace my fork stanchion after a knock?
If it's only a surface knock, you don't need to replace the fork stanchion. The most important thing is to repair it as soon as you can after the knock so the seals don't get damaged.
Why does it take 6 to 8 hours to dry?
We use a high strength epoxy resin. This resin is a thermosetting liquid polymer. Its drying time can vary from 6 to 8 hours depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. It dries noticeably faster when next to a heat source (radiator, heater or hair dryer). Make sure to mix the 2 liquids for at least 3 minutes, this step is key so that the resin dries completely within the announced time.
After I've done the repair, I can still feel a slight bump after running my finger along the scratch, is that normal?
By applying the resin and then sanding it flush, you fully fill the cavity created by the knock. If you can still feel some roughness, it is very likely that you didn't file down the bump fully. In such instances, you can repeat the entire process being careful with the filing and sanding this time to get perfect results.
Why epoxy resin ?
So far, many mountain bikers used nail polish or superglue to seal the stripes. It's simple and cheap. But these products are very far from the performance of the epoxy resin in terms of hardness and duration. They only provide you with a very temporary repair. Sendhit worked closely with an industrial varnish manufacturer to design a resin adapted to the stresses imposed by a MTB stanchion : strong adhesion to metal / Impact and friction resistance / High tolerance to oily environments. The characteristics of the epoxy resin meet these mechanical constraints and thus ensure the longevity of your repairs, whatever your practice.
How to restore the gloss of the resin after sanding?
Once dried, the resin is shiny but sanding makes its surface matte. To restore it, you can use a quality polishing paste for metal. We particularly recommend Autosol Metal Polish ©. You can also use a lubricant for suspension stanchions that will also limit friction.
